Getting More Space in Your Current Garage
Is your garage so full that you're parking your car in the driveway? Or does the car fit in, but you can't get out of the garage without tripping over something or knocking something down? You are not alone in this; many people use their garage for storage. Without a system to organize your storage space though, you are most likely wasting tons of space that could be better utilized.
The words garage and remodel often do not automatically go together in most people's thoughts, but that's exactly what you need to do. Doing a great garage remodel can both increase your storage space and still be easy on the budget. You will need to assess your storage needs, and plan the best way to utilize the wasted space in your garage.
Planning For Your Garage Remodel
You need to create a plan for what you want to store in the garage, where you want to store it, and how you want to store it. Start by clearing out the garage, right down to the bare walls and floor. Pick a nice weekend, so you can pile things outside if needed. While you're removing all the stuff, sort it into similar groups. For example, put all sports equipment in one pile, while all gardening supplies go in another.
For each item you pull out of your garage, think about when was the last time you used it. If it's been years, perhaps it's time to pass the item on to someone who could use it. Of course, toss anything you find that is broken or otherwise unusable. Once the garage is empty, give it a good cleaning before continuing to give a good base to your new design.
Remember how you sorted your stuff into piles when you took it out of the garage? Look to see what kinds of groups you have, and figure out where the best place to store it would be. Anything that gets used frequently needs to be where it will be easy to access. Kids’ sporting equipment will need to be stored at a lower level than adult equipment, so the children can reach it easily, and it is easy for them to put the equipment away.
What Storage Devices Are Available
There is such a huge variety of storage devices that the hardest part of your garage remodel may be choosing what to use. Hooks, shelves, and cabinets are the most common and least expensive. There are also some excellent products that make use of the overhead space that often gets wasted, like pulley systems or lifts. Generally, a combination of the various devices will give you the most ideal setup for your garage.
A section with pegboard for the wall and hooks will give you an easily adjustable way to hang all your tools in one convenient spot. There are many things other than hooks that can be attached to the pegboard, as well. Specialty holders are made in almost every shape and configuration to hold everything from screws to screwdrivers. Another advantage to the pegboard system is that it is inexpensive to purchase and easy to install for the do-it-yourselfer.
Shelving is one of the least expensive ways to utilize all the space from floor to ceiling. Systems with adjustable brackets and shelves will allow you to adjust the height of each shelf to your exact needs, but standing utility shelf units can work, as well. Using clear covered totes in varying sizes can be helpful in your organization, as the contents can be seen easily, and the totes are stackable. Totes or other containers that are not see-through can easily be labeled using large stickers that you can purchase at any office supply store.
Cabinets are a must if you are storing flammable items such as paints or strong cleaners. They are also a good idea for any toxic items such as pesticides and fertilizers, especially if you have small children around. For safety's sake, you should have at least those items in a locked cabinet, preferably out of reach of children. Cabinets are also good for keeping dust from building up on items that are stored for long periods without use.
Where To Buy Garage Organizational Tools
Many standard items can be purchased at your local discount store or home store. You'll find a plethora of hooks, shelf units, and durable cabinets at these types of stores. Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to find every item you want in either of these stores. For a really functional garage remodel, you may want to check out some of the specialty stores found online. These websites specialize in organizing garages and have many items that cannot be found elsewhere:
